Sunday, August 06, 2017

Like every year, the purpose of the 9th annual Gourmets & Gourmands championed by Hartmans on 26 August 2017 will be to raise awareness for the special needs of the 350 disabled students of Carpe Diem School. Every year the Garden Route community learns more about this gem of a school, its learners and the facilities available to the local community.  Gourmets and Gourmands championed by Hartmans on behalf of Carpe Diem School is evidence of this institution’s dedication to raise funds for their special needs learners.

The day to day running of Carpe Diem School comes at great financial expense.  Carpe Diem school caters for ± 350 children with physical and learning disabilities.  For the past 18 years students from areas stretching from Plettenberg Bay to Mossel Bay have been attending Carpe Diem school.  82 boys and girls live on the school grounds is separate hostels.  180 students are fetched daily from their homes with 6 customized busses that also accommodate wheelchairs.  The Principal, Karools Hauptfleisch, manages the school with 29 full time teachers, 1 nursing sister, and 46 supporting staff that includes a Psychologist, Occupational Health Therapist, Physiotherapist, Speech Therapist and parents and volunteers. The school also has an inclusive education team which consists of a Psychologist, Learning Support Teacher and Occupational Health Therapist.

Gourmets and Gourmands championed by Hartmans has been established as Carpe Diem School’s most successful fundraising event.  The school appreciates the continuous involvement from the community and the way in which the community embraces all its fund-raising events.  In the past 3 electronic wheelchairs were bought, bathrooms in the hostels were made accessible for disabled children, the roof of the square was closed, the computer laboratory was upgraded and the floor of the basketball court was renewed.  This year the school wishes to establish a new feeding scheme eating area where ±140 children will be fed. With sponsors such as Hartman & Son Butcher as the premier sponsor, Raffaele D’Amato Jewellers with their spectacular item to be auctioned off, Nedbank, local artist René Scribante, Michael Pashut of Commercial Auto & Bus, Fancy Functions, Xerox and Ciro Coffee the event will undoubtedly be a success.
